Sunflower Nostalgia

This painting was inspired when I placed a quilt I had designed for my daughter’s wedding gift under an antique bowl and pitcher from my grandmother.  I added the sunflowers to represent my Kansas heritage (sunflowers are the Kansas state flower).  This is a watercolor, despite the vivid oil-like appearance.  The brilliant colors were achieved with layer after layer of glazes – some of the petals have a dozen or more glazes in order to get the deep translucency I wanted to acquire.  The original is fused to museum board and then covered with an acrylic protective spray that keeps out the UV rays.
