Sitting Pretty

These California quail scurry around our property in Southern Oregon all year long.  In the spring, there is nothing cuter than watching as the proud parents lead a whole string of tiny ping-pong sized babies across the driveway to the blackberry bushes where they make their home.  We stop our car and sit and count as they hustle across to the safety of the tangled shrubs. This painting was done in scratchboard. Scratchboard historically has been around since the 19th century, but has become very popular in recent years. I use a factory made masonite board baked with a white clay finish.  India ink is then sprayed over the white surface.  My job is to scratch off the black ink with whatever tools I find appropriate (my favorite is an exacto knife) to show the white below and form the picture.  The picture is then protected with a special fixative that makes it unnecessary to cover with glass.  The results are stunning.
